Blast From the Past: Ice Cream in a Bag

LOVE this simple, quick, interactive way to make ice cream with a couple of Ziplock bags!!

This is perfect to do outside because there are usually leaks. It takes about 10 minutes total to process after the ingredients are all combined. You could do this with friends and make a party of it!

Recipe for 1-2 children:

1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon sugar
4 cups crushed ice
4 tablespoons rock salt
2 quart size Ziplock bags
1 gallon size Ziplock freezer bag
a hand towel or gloves to keep fingers from freezing as well!

Add milk, sugar, and vanilla together in the small Ziplock bag. Zip TIGHT (with as little air left as possible) and place into larger Ziplock bag with the ice and salt around it. Shake. It should take less than 10 minutes for it to set up.

The thicker the milk, the creamier the ice cream (half-and-half works well, too).

If you double bag the smaller bag, less leaks are prone to happen.

I always put music on and let the kids dance around as they shook. You could also have them work in partners and pass it between them when fingers get too cold. Wear gloves to prevent frozen fingers.

Eating it straight from the bag is fun!

To make it educational (we did this while studying “matter” in school), be sure to talk with your children about what is happening.
