5 Senses: Taste

This is a fun one! Provide different types of food for your children to sample. I like to choose foods that fit into these categories: sweet, salty, bitter, and sour. It’s fun to introduce your children to this vocabulary. I like to have them taste a certain food, and then decide (usually with a picture) which category it falls into. We also talk about how smell contributes to taste.

I provide these foods:

Sweet: sugar and coconut (coconut is something many kids are not familiar with)

Salty: salt and pretzels (salt looks a lot like sugar so it’s tricky for kids)

Bitter: unsweetened cocoa and vanilla (smell good, look good, but taste yucky)

Sour: lemon juice and pieces of lime

  1. Don’t forget Umami … just throw some soy sauce in and you’re good. 😉
