We are in the heart of winter here in Utah! My kids and I are crafting like crazy trying to pass the time since it’s too cold to be outside. This week, I will be sharing a bunch of fun winter-themed crafts. I hope you enjoy!
This is a fun science experiment for your children.
Crystal solution: Mix 1/2 cup of boiling water with 1/2 cup Espom salt (found with the first-aid supplies at your store).
Art project: Draw a winter picture on colored construction paper with crayons. I think they look better when the kids draw dark.
Science experiment: Paint the crystal solution on top of the picture. Be sure to get the whole picture wet. As it dries, the crystals will appear. It’s fun to experiment with the crystal solution. Add more salt. Add more water. Paint a thinner layer. Paint a thicker layer. Let the crystal solution cool before painting. See what happens!
As it dries, your paper may curl like this:
After it’s dry, I just place it between a stack of books. It ends up drying flat and doesn’t mess up the crystals.
**Be sure your children do not drink the solution!
That looks so fun! Next time I get to the store – which who knows when I will be brave enough to take three kids out in -10 degree weather! – I will have to pick up some epsom salt. 🙂

Amy,
Once you do have a bag of it, it will last forever! I think mine has lasted 7 years! 🙂
