Pilgrims: Fry Bread and Butter

Today your children will be cooking bread like the Pilgrims and also making their own butter!

FRY BREAD

Background:

The Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to grow and plant crops, such as wheat and corn. They ate the food in a variety of ways. One of those ways was fry bread. Using a flat stone, they would grind the wheat or corn, mix it with some water, and make flat patties of bread. They would then bake the bread in their ovens, which were very large, made from stone, and heated with fire.

Supplies:

Rhodes rolls, defrosted

Activity:

1. It’s fun to let your children “grind” their own flour, as mentioned above, just to have the experience.

2. To make it easy though, give your child a roll. Have them flatten it into a patty.

3. You can now do this one of two ways. You can actually fry this in a deep fryer, or you can bake it in the oven. I prefer the latter. Follow the directions on the packaging.

4. Enjoy your fry bread with homemade butter (directions below).

HOMEMADE BUTTER

Background:

The Pilgrims also made their own butter; they didn’t buy it at the store. This process took a very long time. They would begin by collecting milk from the cows. The milk would have to sit for hours so that the cream would form at the top. After enough cream was collected, which normally took many days, they could begin to churn it. This would take hours and be very tiring. When the cream began to thicken, it was close to being done. They would then have to separate the cream from the buttermilk. After pouring out the buttermilk, which made the butter sour, they would wash the butter. Then the butter was placed into molds. It was then ready to eat!!

Supplies:

whipping cream (not whipped cream; the stuff you want is liquid)

jars with lids (baby food jars work really well)

Activity:

1. Put a small amount of whipping cream into each jar. Close the lid tightly!

2. Begin shaking. Your child will have to shake for awhile. This is fun to do in partners and with music. Expect leaks. 🙂

3. After about 10 minutes or so, a large lump will start to form. Keep going, until it’s good and solid. There will also be a small amount of milk leftover.

4. Drain off the milk.

5. Use a knife and put on your fry bread. You can add a little bit of salt for taste. Be sure to talk about how difficult it was to make butter this way!
