The Swings

This summer, my 4-year-old son has been learning a lot of new skills–something he is very proud of! One of the skills we’ve been working on is pumping himself on the swing.

Did you know that many of these large motor skills* are developmental though? Most children learn to pump themselves on the swings around the age of 5–some are younger, some are older. But developmentally, this is the appropriate age to really teach your child this skill.

I wanted to share this article today. I thought it was fabulous! They share a bunch of hints and ideas  about teaching this skill that I loved and am trying the next time we head to the park! I’ll let you know how it goes! 🙂

*Large motor skills (sometimes known as gross motor skills) are movements that involve the large muscles in your body; muscles you use for walking, running, crawling, sitting, etc. such as your legs, arms, torso, back, and abdomen.
