This is an obvious one, but be sure to take your children on a field trip to a local farm!! Many farms allow the children to pet, and even feed, the animals, which is crucial to their development and learning. We have a local farm here that lets you participate in milking a cow!! How fun is that! Spring is the ideal time to go, as there are usually many baby animals being born. Be sure to discuss their experience using the 5 senses (what do you smell? what do you see?), and be sure to teach them a little bit about each animal (a baby goat is called a kid).
Here is a fun farm matching game I made that you could easily duplicate using your own pictures (photos from your trip would be so fun!). It would be a great extension activity. The children simply match the baby animal to its mommy. We play it like memory, but you could adapt it up or down, as needed.
