Fingerprint Bugs

This week, our focus will be on bugs!! Most children love bugs, mine being no exception. Every time we go outside, they stop and watch them crawl around, and my daughter gets very upset if we squish them. So, here’s to a creepy-crawly week!

Supplies:

Paper

Stamp pad* (a variety of colors is better, but use whatever you have on-hand)

Crayons

Thin black marker

Procedure:

1.  Have your children use crayons to draw a background (I always call it a home)  for their bugs.

2. With guidance, show them how to put one finger or thumb onto the stamp pad, pressing gently. And then, how to press their finger or thumb gently onto the paper, leaving a print. Many children will try to rub their print around so if you want a distinct print, be sure to show them what you expect.

3. Repeat as necessary, washing with a wet wipe or washcloth in between color changes.

4. Allow to dry. Once dry, use the marker to add legs, antennaes, and wings to your fingerprints to create bugs. Definitely one to display on the fridge!

*You could also use paint (as my picture shows). It’s just a little bit messier.

**I usually showed an example to my students, and that’s all I have right now. I’ll try to get my son to make one later so you can see it from a 4-year-old’s perspective!
